Text Box: THOUGHTS AND DOINGS
Saturday, 25th day of May 1895–My Birthday
     CURSES AND TARNATION!
Mother, known by me as Mop, would take an inch of hide off me if she heard me spew those salty words, but I can write them here. Pop promised that no one but me is ever to read this pesky journal.
CURSES AND TARNATION! CURSES AND TARNATION! CURSES AND TARNATION! C&T! C&T! C&T!
I'm supposed to be out riding the valley with Mop, checking on the new calves. Instead, Pop handed me this journal, tugged at his beard, wished me a happy birthday, and said he wanted me to start recording my thoughts and doings–at once. He fears my writing composition skills will wither on account of–once again–no teacher being hired this past winter. (None was foolhardy enough to take on the Emerald Valley enfants terribles, of which, I suspect, I am thought the most terrible. I reminded Pop that I had spent last winter being well-schooled in Craig, but that swayed him not a whit. Pop never forces me to do anything I do not wish to do. I suspect a plot.
Although it is fiction, Queen Cat was inspired by the fascinating life of Ann Bassett, who was born in the northwestern corner of Colorado in 1878, and who was known as "Queen Ann," "the Original Cowgirl," and "Queen of the Cattle Rustlers." An excerpt follows.
